Shotokan Karate Kata Tutorial Taikyoku Shodan or Kihon Kata

Taikyoku Shodan or Kihon Kata is the first kata in the Shotokan karate system and the first kata in the Taikyoku series, of which there are six. It left gedanbarai side videois the most basic of all Shotokan kata and has only 20 moves, which comprise of downward block (gedan barai) and stepping punch (oi zuki).

The entire kata consists of just one Shotokan stance and thats front stance. Many karateka believe Master Gichin Funakoshi developed the Taikyoku kata, but it was his son, Yoshitika Funakoshi (Gigo), who was largely responsible for their creation. Taikyoku Shodan or Kihon kata, is practiced in many Shotokan karate Dojo, but just as many Dojo do not teach this kata, simply because its pattern is similar to that of Heian Shodan. Technically, Taikyoku kata are not part of the 26 JKA kata.

kihon kata is required practice the first belt in many Shotokan dojo and although this kata is very basic, it should be studied and practiced long and hard as it covers all the basic fundamentals of Shotokan karate.
